Can I move my ChatGPT history into Gemini?

Yes. Google has built a page for it, it is free, and it takes a zip file of up to 5 GB. It brings across your conversations and the instructions you had saved about how you like answers written.

What it does not bring is anything you made inside the old assistant. No generated images, no files. And I went looking for the same thing in the opposite direction and could not find it.

I was not expecting to find this

I went looking at Gemini for a different reason. I wanted to know how much of the forgetting problem Google had already solved on its own, because if a free assistant now remembers everything, a lot of what I write about matters less.

I found more than I expected. There is a setting that lets Gemini use your previous conversations. There are saved assistants you can build for free, with your own instructions and files attached from your Drive. There is a paid layer that pins whole folders as permanent sources.

The import was the one I had not thought about at all, and it is the one I have not stopped thinking about since.

What the page actually says

I am being careful here, because I got two things about Gemini wrong earlier the same day by assuming instead of checking.

The page says it takes your history from your current AI provider. It does not name which ones. It accepts a zip file, up to 5 GB, and you need to be over 18 with personalisation switched on. It states plainly that it does not bring images or files that were made in the other app.

It also says availability varies by region, so it may not appear for everyone. I have not tested it end to end, and I am not going to write that it works perfectly when what I did was read the page and look for its opposite.

The part that is missing

There is no page for getting out.

Not to Claude, not back to ChatGPT, not to a file on your own computer that another assistant could read. I looked, and if it exists it is not somewhere a normal person would find it.

I do not think that is a conspiracy. It is simply that nobody is paid to build the exit. An import brings you in, and it can be measured in people arriving. An export lets you leave, and the only thing it can be measured in is people leaving. One of those gets built.

So the doors are getting very good, and they all open the same way.

Why this matters even if you like Gemini

The question people are actually asking when they search this is not really about Gemini. It is: can I take my work with me?

Right now the honest answer is that you can take it in one direction, once. If in a year the best assistant for what you do is a different one, or cheaper, or your employer standardises on something else, you will be back at the same door and it will still only open inwards.

That is the bit that is easy to miss when the import works nicely. Moving in feels like proof that your work travels. It is proof that it travelled once.

What actually survives a move

The things that survive are the ones that were never inside an assistant to begin with.

A page of ordinary text in your own cloud drive does not need anyone to build a door for it. You open it, you hand it over, and whatever you are talking to reads it. That works with Gemini today, with ChatGPT today, and with whatever replaces both, because nothing about it is owned by any of them.

It is less impressive than a 5 GB import. It is also the only part I am confident will still work in two years.

The honest limit

None of this is an argument against using the import. If you are moving to Gemini, use it. Bringing your history across is better than starting cold, and free is a fair price.

And the alternative has a cost of its own. A page in your own drive is only as useful as your last update to it. A folder left alone for a month describes a project that has already moved on, and a confident wrong page is worse than no page, because an assistant will follow it straight off a cliff.

So this is not a clean win for either side. It is a choice between something polished that belongs to a company and something plain that belongs to you.
